Surviving the "Drift Tax": The Best Value JDM Chassis Today
JDM NINJA ยท 7/15/2026
Every popular drift chassis now carries a premium for its badge. Here are the mechanically identical cars that escaped the drift tax, what they really cost to run, and the one buying rule that saves the most money.
The drift tax is real. Any rear-wheel-drive Japanese chassis with a following now costs two or three times what it did a decade ago, and the cars that were once the default entry point โ the S13, S14, and AE86 โ are priced as collectibles rather than consumables. The good news is that the tax is applied unevenly, and the cars it has missed are often mechanically identical to the ones it has not.
Why the tax exists
Three things pushed prices up simultaneously. Supply collapsed, because twenty years of drifting consumed the cars physically. Demand rose, because drifting went from a subculture to a televised sport. And the US 25-year rule opened a huge market for exactly these chassis at exactly the wrong moment.
The result is that you are now paying a premium for a badge and a silhouette. That premium is avoidable.
The best value chassis right now
Toyota Mark II Tourer V (JZX100)
Mechanically identical to the Chaser Tourer V โ same 280 hp single-turbo VVT-i 1JZ-GTE, same platform, same suspension โ but historically 20โ30% cheaper because the styling is more conservative. If you want a 1JZ, this is the smart buy. See the Mark II Tourer V page against the Chaser.
Toyota Verossa VR25
The forgotten last 1JZ-GTE saloon. Odd styling killed it in Japan, which means the cheapest possible entry to the drivetrain. Details on the Verossa page.
Nissan Laurel Club S (C35)
An RB25DET, rear-wheel drive, LSD on Club S cars, and a comfortable four-door body. Same engine family as the R33 and R34 GT-T for a fraction of the price. See the Laurel C35 page.
Nissan Skyline GTS-25t (R33)
Still the value pick of the Skyline range because it is not a GT-R. Lighter and more entertaining sideways than the all-wheel-drive car, with the same RB25DET tuning headroom. See the GTS-25t page.
Mazda RX-8
The cheapest genuinely great-handling rear-drive coupe on the market, priced low because of the engine's reputation. If you accept the compression-test discipline the rotary demands, nothing else offers this chassis for the money. Read the RX-8 page before you dismiss it.
Lexus IS300 / Toyota Altezza
A 2JZ-GE, double wishbone rear suspension, and four doors. Slower than a turbo car and vastly cheaper to run. See the IS300 and Altezza RS200.
Cost comparison: what you actually spend
| Chassis | Engine | Relative purchase cost | Relative running cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nissan Silvia S15 | SR20DET | Very high | Moderate |
| Toyota Chaser JZX100 | 1JZ-GTE | High | Moderate |
| Toyota Mark II JZX100 | 1JZ-GTE | Moderate | Moderate |
| Nissan Laurel C35 | RB25DET | Moderate | Moderate |
| Mazda RX-8 | 13B-MSP | Low | High (fuel, oil, rebuilds) |
| Lexus IS300 | 2JZ-GE | Low | Low |
The rule that saves the most money
Buy the shell, not the engine. A straight, rust-free chassis with a tired engine is a cheaper project than a rotten car with a fresh build, every single time. Engines and gearboxes are still shipped from Japan by the container-load; original panels, subframes and floors are not.
Specifically, check the rear arches, sills, strut towers, boot floor and rear subframe mounting points on any Japanese import. Those are the areas that decide whether a car is worth restoring or breaking.
Before you commit
Work out the landed cost including duty, VAT and registration in your country โ it is frequently 40โ60% on top of the auction price. Our import calculator covers 13 countries. Then compare candidates side by side in the comparison tool, and check where each model sits on the market index before you decide what is actually good value.
