How Much Does JDM Car Ownership Really Cost?

The auction price is just the beginning. Here's an honest breakdown of the real total cost of buying, importing, registering, maintaining, and running a JDM performance car in Europe.
The Number on the Auction Sheet Is Not What You Pay
One of the most common mistakes first-time JDM importers make is budgeting for the auction price and then being shocked by everything that comes after. The auction price is the starting point. By the time a JDM car is legally on the road in your country, the total cost can be 50โ100% higher than what was paid at auction. Understanding every cost in advance is what separates a successful import from an expensive lesson.
Buying Costs: Auction and Agent Fees
When you buy through a Japanese auction house via an agent, you pay the hammer price plus a buyer's premium to the auction house (typically 4โ7% of the hammer price), plus the agent's commission (usually โฌ200โโฌ600 flat fee or 5โ10% depending on the agent). These costs are unavoidable and should be built into your maximum bid calculation from the start.
Shipping: RoRo vs Container
RoRo (Roll-on Roll-off) shipping is the cheaper option at approximately โฌ500โโฌ900 from Japan to a Northern European port. The car is driven into the ship's hold and secured in an open deck. It's safe for most cars but exposes the vehicle to sea air for 5โ7 weeks.
Container shipping costs โฌ1,000โโฌ1,600 but seals the car inside a steel container for the entire journey. For valuable or unmolested original cars, the extra cost is worthwhile. Discuss which option your importer offers and confirm whether insurance is included โ it often isn't by default.
Import Duty and VAT
All cars imported from Japan into the EU attract a 6.5% import tariff calculated on the car's declared value plus freight costs. On top of this, your country's standard rate of VAT applies. In Denmark, that's 25%. On a car purchased for โฌ20,000 and shipped for โฌ800, you would owe approximately โฌ1,352 in duty plus โฌ5,338 in VAT โ a combined tax burden of over โฌ6,600 before the car even clears customs. This is the number many buyers fail to plan for.
Registration and Technical Inspection
Once the car is in your country, it must pass a roadworthiness inspection and be registered. In most European countries, minor modifications may be required โ lighting adjustments are the most common. Budget โฌ200โโฌ500 for any required modifications and the inspection itself.
In Denmark, registration tax (registreringsafgift) is calculated as a percentage of the car's value and can be very substantial for high-value performance cars. This tax is unique to Denmark and can significantly exceed the import duty and VAT combined for premium vehicles. Use the JDM NINJA import calculator to model this accurately before committing to a purchase.
Pre-Purchase Inspection and Immediate Repairs
Even a Grade 4.5 auction car may arrive with small issues โ worn tyres, ageing coolant hoses, or deferred maintenance items. Budget at minimum โฌ500โโฌ1,500 for bringing any imported car fully up to standard when it arrives. For older performance cars, budget more generously: fresh fluids, new belts and hoses, a brake fluid flush, and a full check of all rubber components is sensible on any car that has crossed the ocean.
Annual Running Costs
JDM performance cars are not cheap to run, and costs vary significantly by model. A Nissan Silvia S15 with a stock SR20DET is relatively economical to service โ parts are well priced and the engine is well understood. An RX-7 with a twin-rotor Wankel requires more specialised attention and more frequent apex seal monitoring. A GT-R R34 at the top of its maintenance cycle can require substantial expenditure.
As a rough guide: budgeting โฌ1,500โโฌ3,000 per year for routine maintenance and tyres on a well-maintained JDM performance car is realistic for average mileage. Track use, modifications, or deferred maintenance will increase this significantly.
Insurance
JDM performance cars often qualify for classic or specialist agreed-value insurance, which can be more economical than standard vehicle insurance for appreciating assets. Specialist insurers who understand the JDM market offer better coverage terms than mainstream providers. Shop around specifically within the classic car insurance market rather than going to a standard broker.
The Full Picture
JDM car ownership is not a budget pursuit, and pretending otherwise leads to financial stress. Approached honestly, with realistic budgets for acquisition, import, registration, and maintenance, it is one of the most rewarding forms of car ownership available. These cars appreciate in value, deliver driving experiences that modern cars cannot replicate, and connect their owners to one of the most passionate communities in the automotive world. Just go in with your eyes open and your spreadsheet complete.
