The Next Wave of JDM Legends: What's Turning 25 in 2026 and 2027
JDM NINJA ยท 7/15/2026
The US 25-year rule reshapes JDM prices worldwide. Here is exactly what becomes eligible in 2026 and 2027, how prices have historically moved around those dates, and why European buyers should be looking at different cars entirely.
The 25-year rule is the single biggest force shaping JDM values outside Japan. In the United States, a vehicle becomes exempt from federal FMVSS compliance 25 years after its month of manufacture, which means cars that were previously impossible to register legally become freely importable overnight. When that happens, a huge new pool of buyers appears and prices in Japan move within weeks.
Here is what crosses the line in 2026 and 2027, and what it realistically means for what you will pay.
Turning 25 in 2026 (built in 2001)
- Honda Integra Type R (DC5) โ the JDM 220 hp K20A version, not the American RSX Type-S. Early four-lamp cars became eligible through 2026. See the DC5 Type R profile.
- Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII โ the first Evo with the Active Centre Differential. Details on our Evo VII page.
- Toyota Altezza RS200 Z Edition โ the 3S-GE BEAMS six-speed manual saloon. Full spec on the Altezza page.
- Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R late-production cars โ the final V-Spec II and Nรผr cars are 2002 builds, so most of the R34 GT-R run clears in 2026 and 2027.
- Subaru Impreza WRX STi Bugeye (GDB) โ the round-headlight cars nobody wanted, which are now the cheap route into an EJ207. See the Bugeye page.
Turning 25 in 2027 (built in 2002)
- Mazda RX-7 Spirit R โ the final 1500-car FD run, and the most valuable version. Read the Spirit R profile.
- Honda Accord Euro R (CL7) โ a 220 hp K20A sedan with a helical LSD that most people have never heard of. See the Euro R page.
- Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R Nรผr โ the last 1000 cars, with the N1 block and turbos.
- Toyota Chaser and Mark II JZX110 โ the final 1JZ-GTE saloons before Toyota moved to the Verossa. See the Verossa VR25.
- Subaru Impreza WRX STi Bugeye Spec C โ the lightweight, variable-nozzle-turbo homologation version.
What actually happens to prices
The pattern has repeated with every notable car since the R32 GT-R cleared in 2014. Prices in Japan begin rising 12โ18 months before eligibility, as exporters buy ahead of demand. The steepest rise happens in the six months either side of the date. Then, roughly two years later, prices soften slightly as the backlog of stored examples clears.
| Car | Year eligible (US) | Typical Japan price movement |
|---|---|---|
| Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R | 2014โ2019 | Roughly tripled over five years |
| Nissan Skyline R33 GT-R | 2020โ2023 | Roughly doubled |
| Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R | 2024โ2027 | Already at collector levels before eligibility |
| Honda Integra Type R DC5 | 2026โ2031 | Rising now; clean JDM cars scarce |
What this means if you live in Europe
European buyers are not bound by the 25-year rule, and this is the part people miss: you are competing with American demand for the same Japanese auction stock, but you do not have to wait. Cars that are three or four years away from US eligibility are frequently the best value available right now, because American exporters cannot yet buy them.
In practical terms, that makes 2003โ2006 cars the sweet spot for European buyers in 2026. An Evo VIII, a late DC5 Type R, or a RX-8 costs meaningfully less than a car that has just cleared 25 years.
How to act on this
- Decide whether you are buying to keep or buying ahead of a value curve. They lead to different cars.
- Check landed cost, not auction price. Duty, VAT and registration frequently add 40โ60% depending on country โ run it through the import calculator.
- Buy the best shell available, not the highest specification. Corrosion, not mechanical condition, decides what a Japanese import is worth after five European winters.
- Watch our market index for the direction of travel on individual models rather than the market as a whole.
